The photos my family took from our vacation to coastal Maine in Acadia National Park in July 2021 continue to inspire me. The rocky coastline is just so beautiful, and very different from the beaches in my home state of NC.

“Blue Swallowtail”
One of my daughters had emailed me some beautiful photos from a recent hike she enjoyed. One of the images was a close-up of a Swallowtail butterfly that was enjoying some sunshine right in the middle of the trail. As much as I love butterflies, I knew this would make a lovely piece. I enjoyed painting this one very much!
“Boiling Springs Barn”
This watercolor is of an old, dilapidated barn that sits just outside the little college town of Boiling Springs, NC, a bit of the local scene near the university campus.
The roof is peeling apart, and the old truck has been sitting there for a very long time.

“Linville Gorge”
I recently completed this watercolor from a beautiful view I have enjoyed in Linville Gorge, in the Appalachian Mountains of Western North Carolina. This old pine tree stood alone against the forces of nature for many years.

“Blackwater Falls Near Davis, WV”
My daughter sent me a photo from a motorcycle trip she took, stopping at Blackwater Falls in Davis, WV. This waterfall is beautiful, a 57′ cascade of dark water that is colored by the tannic acid of the fallen hemlock and red spruce needles.

“From the Pacific Coast Highway”
This vibrant scene is from the coast of Oregon, from the Pacific Coast Highway, paralleling the Pacific Ocean. With regular rainfall, this region is filled with prolific greenery.

“Serenity”
In July 2021, I traveled to Maine with my family to explore Acadia National Park and the Bar Harbor area. We stayed just off of Desert Island, and this view was part of the scenery along the road between our rental property and the entrance to the park.
This beautiful coastal meadow is a peaceful combination of pools, rocks, grass, and forests.

“Diggs Valley Road Barn”
There is a little traveled unpaved road in Loudoun County, VA, where this beautiful, historic barn is quietly deteriorating. I like the composition of this building, including the old stone, stucco, wood and rusting metal.
This watercolor I have recently completed will be included in the NC Watercolor Society’s annual exhibit in New Bern, NC, this October (2022).

“Appalachian Trail”
There is a beautiful stretch of the Appalachian Trail that rolls along just east of the Shenandoah National Forest just outside of Front Royal, Virginia. My daughter sent me a photo of a fall hike that she and her husband enjoyed, and I was inspired to paint it. The beautiful, blue sky peeking through the golden leaves and the trees stretching upward create such a lovely, and peaceful scene. I enjoyed creating this piece very much.
“Frosted Balsams”
On a camping trip late in 2021, we were delighted with the beauty of the forest at the top of Clingman’s Dome in the Smoky Mountain National Park. The temperature had dropped overnight, and the trees were coated with frost in the morning. It was so beautiful!
